Your privacy
Privacy Policy
We only ask for what we need to get your gear to you and look after you afterwards, and we handle it with care. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the rights you have over it under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
Last updated June 2026
What we collect
When you shop with us or get in touch, we may collect:
- Your name, delivery and billing address, email address and phone number.
- Your order history and any messages you send us.
- Payment information, which is processed securely by our payment provider. We never see or store your full card number.
- Basic technical information about how you use the site (see Cookies and analytics below).
Why we collect it
We use your information only for clear, sensible reasons:
- To process, deliver and keep you updated on your orders.
- To answer your questions and provide support.
- To handle returns, refunds and your Consumer Guarantees Act rights.
- To meet our legal and tax obligations.
- To send you marketing only if you have opted in, and you can opt out any time.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your information, ever. We share it only with the trusted services that help us run the store, and only as far as they need it:
- Our payment provider (Stripe) to take payment securely.
- Couriers and delivery partners to get your order to you.
- Our email and website providers to send order updates and run the site.
We may also disclose information where the law requires it.
Where your information is stored
Some of these providers, including our payment and email services, store and process information on secure servers outside New Zealand. Where that happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure your information is protected by comparable safeguards, in line with the Privacy Act 2020.
How we protect it
We use reasonable safeguards to keep your information safe, including secure (encrypted) connections, reputable hosting, and limiting access to those who need it. No system is ever completely risk-free, but if a privacy breach were ever likely to cause you serious harm, we would notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, as the law requires.
How long we keep it
We keep your information only as long as we need it for the purposes above, or as long as the law requires. Order and tax records, for example, must be kept for seven years under New Zealand tax law. When we no longer need information, we securely delete or de-identify it.
Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can ask us what personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it if it is wrong. Just email us and we will help, normally within 20 working days. There is no charge for a reasonable request.
Cookies and analytics
Like most websites, we use cookies and similar tools to keep the store working (for example, remembering what is in your cart) and to understand how the site is used so we can improve it. You can control or clear cookies in your browser settings, though some parts of the store may not work as well without them.
Marketing emails
We will only email you marketing if you have chosen to hear from us. Every marketing email includes a one-click unsubscribe, and we act on it promptly. Order and service emails (like dispatch updates) are not marketing and are part of running your order.
Questions or complaints
Our privacy contact is orders@mcbear.co.nz. If you have any concern about how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
